Our Traditions

The Youth Music Ministry is involved in many worthwhile activities that include visiting the residents of Hellenos House, a home for physically and mentally challenged young adults. The youth choir reaches out to bring joy to residents of local assisted-living and nursing home facilities. We celebrate the Divine Liturgy with His Grace Bishop Andonios and the senior citizens at St. Michael's Home. The youth choir visits other Greek Orthodox churches in the Archdiocesan District to sing the Divine Liturgy. We enjoy fellowship on Broadway theatre trips; musical productions at Tilles Center; pool parties and the annual Celebration of Music Concert.

Youth Choir News

The June 2016 school-year came to a spectacular close at the Celebration of Music Concert presented by ELeni Kaufman featuring superb piano and voice solos and glorious performances by the Byzantine Youth Choir to a sold-out audience on the world renowned stage of Carnegie Hall!

Each youth choir member is an integral and valued part of the Archangel Michael Family. In appreciation for their service to our church and dedication to youth choir, everyone enjoyed a fabulous sun-filled end-of-year pool party.

Our History

More than thirty years ago, a music hymnology program was instituted for children attending Sunday School classes. Learning the meaning of the hymns served as a teaching tool to enrich the Orthodox experience for our young people. All grade levels, pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and GOYAns, were taught the hymns of our faith. Every year, the Sunday School children participated in music presentations for Sunday School Moving-Up and Christmas Pageants. The Hymnology Program fostered the development of a youth and teen choir. Our young people became interested in joining choir and it flourished. For many years, youth choir sang the Divine Liturgy every Sunday for the first service at our former church location in Roslyn.

Through the years, choir enjoyed presenting Christmas programs at the Ladies Philoptochos Brunch each December.

We were especially proud when the Archangel Michael Community hosted the first-ever Archdiocesan District Youth Music Conference & Liturgy in 2009.

The angelic voices of the youth choir have sung at our church Ground-blessing, Ground-breaking, Thyranixia, Consecration, and Ordinations of Fr. Evan Evangelides and Fr. Nikolas Karloutsos

Another special highlight for our community took place on October 2013, when 89 adult and youth church musicians across the Archdiocesan District, which encompasses the Connecticut and New York area, gathered at Archangel Michael Church for the 29th Annual Direct Archdiocesan District Federation of Church Musicians Conference & Liturgy. The Conference Choir was conducted by Georgia Kaufman with organist ELeni Rodopoulos Kaufman. The spiritually uplifting ensemble of voices were absolutely magnificent!

Direct Archdiocesan District Federation of Church Musicians

The Byzantine Youth Choir have been active members of the Direct Archdiocesan District Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians for decades. The youth choir brought great pride to our community when they sang at the liturgy of the 37th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress celebrated in 2004 with His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios and our Hierarchs at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. They were also featured at the 2005 Archdiocesan Federation Christmas Concert. Choir members—Stacy Anagnostopoulos, Alexia Efstathiadis, Alexandra Karras, Renee Lascarides, Chanter Andreas Modinos and Choir Director Eleni Rodopoulos Kaufman have performed at the Federation of Church Musicians Cabert Night fundraisers. Youth choir graduates of Archangel Michael Church have been selected to receive numerous Federation Scholarships for their college studies. In November 2012, the magnificent hymns of our faith were chanted by the Archangel Michael Church youth choir in a program in conjuntion with Archdeacon Panteleimon and the priests and chanters of the Archdiocesan Byzantine Choir. At the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Manhattan, the youth choir performed in a concert honoring the Fifteenth Anniversary of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios.

In November 2016, the youth choir sang at the Direct Archdiocesan District Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians 32nd Annual Church Music Conference entitled, I Will Sing Praises to God as Long as I Live. It took place in Southampton at the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary with Fr. Alex Karloutsos and Fr. Constantine Lazarakis on the weekend of November 18th-20th. Highly-respected composer Dr. Tikey Zes conducted the adult choir and Archdiocesan District Youth Music Liaison Georgia Kaufman conducted the youth choir for the Hierarchical Liturgy, which was celebrated with His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios. It was a memorable experience.

May the Light of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ fill your heart!
